John Turner was a local Abilene media/radio personality during the 1950s extending into the 1980s. He used the on-air nom de plume of Stubby Baldwin. Coverage of Dyess AFB was part of his news duties, and he became what would be known today as an Air Force "groupie". He was effectively "adopted" by Dyess personnel, allowing him access to things and places not normally permitted to the ordinary citizen. He also took his pictures in color, unlike the Air Force and Army Corps of Engineers photos, which were all black and white. Photos taken "on site" were of Site 11 - Anson.
Shown above, an Atlas F erected in downtown Abilene between the post office and the Bible Hardware Store on Walnut street. This Atlas gave everyone a chance to see "up close and personal" what the Atlas F looked liked.
The photos below were taken at Dyess AFB during the unloading of the Atlas F from a modified C-133. An excellent video of this process is located on the News, Features and Links page and here: https://youtu.be/1avxFcXOPFw
